I’m going to blog about whatever the hell I want to, including but not limited to college football
I used to think this blog had to be About Writing And The Writing Life, and I self-censored the content here to reflect that Noble Mission.
Well, screw all that.
When I started this blog, I worked really hard on the posts, devoted a lot of time to layout, and keeping my content “pure,” e.g., concerned only with writing and / or its refracted importance in daily life.
Lately, the posts have been solely about rejections and acceptances. And while this has been immeasurably cathartic, it doesn’t always make the for the most scintillating content for those people out there who aren’t me.
I notice, too, that two of my most popular posts – about Lenny Dykstra and Stephen Garcia, respectively – are also all about sports. Every time Lenny Dykstra does something new that’s crazy – and he’s been a regular crazy assembly line for a couple years – I get a bazillion hits to that post. Ditto, to a lesser degree, on Stephen Garcia.

Anyway, I like the hell out of sports. College football, mainly. While I maintain a passing interest in baseball, college basketball, the Olympics, etc., where I really lose all rationality is where college football comes in. Being raised in Nebraska, I was indoctrinated in the state religion of Husker football and follow them with an interest all out of proportion to sane balance. I therefore also follow college football in general.
I’ve shaken nicotine and the Catholic Church, but I just can’t quit Nebraska football, arguably far more damaging than either of the other two.
Roundabout way of saying that from here on out, I’m going to treat this blog like I should have from the beginning, and as other wise bloggers have long since figured out – a place to just post about whatever the hell I feel like.
Maybe I should get on the twitters. I dunno.

Some think that all this cracking down by the NCAA (see, Southern Cal, University of) is going to cause the big players (Texas, say, maybe the whole SEC), to go rogue, abandon the NCAA, and stop pretending college football is about anything other than cash.
I don’t think so. The university prezs would put the kibosh on that. Bear in mind, for instance, that the B1G institutions derive far more money from their academic standing than sports, even football. I doubt they would want to jeopardize that by going rogue in sports purely for the cash.

I went this way, too, after a while. Now I put up travel pictures, rants about politics, bald-faced ads for my own books, and sometimes even something literary. I noticed immediately that my literary posts attract mainly Donko’s favorite half-dozen. The largest number of hits come when I post anything about Buenos Aires. But it isn’t about hits — or I would have had a Paris Hilton blog from the start. I don’t even know why I blog anymore. I think this comes down to a post I write a while back about the “new toy syndrome.” but it remains a pretty decent way to have extended dialogues with people one isn’t likely to ever have a sit-down with.
Definitely good for the extended conversations. I’m happy to get hits but the vast majority are just drive-bys. Conversations are better.
I’ve noticed, also, that a lot of the conversation has switched to Facebook. This post has a dozen or more comments in a smack-talking football conversation there.
